at first i didn’t know how i felt about how this movie will appeal to many just because of the actresses.. it is very interesting that it is drawing two very different audiences, though. the facebook page for the movie is really bizarre, most commenters seem to focus entirely on the surface (a huge theme of the film), appearance of the girls, etc.. it will be very interesting to see how this film is received on a wide scale.. awesome that you saw it in france!
got to meet harmony korine last night after a ‘spring breakers’ showing/q&a :] got to ask him about the difference in working on ‘spring breakers’ in comparison to his previous work. the film is fantastic.. a collage of overblown party imagery interspersed with the more reflective/surreal moments characteristic of his earlier work. also, very nice guy.. we told him we were from nashville and he said ‘nashville represent’ or something before we left.
anyway, go see ‘spring breakers’ next weekend, especially if you’re a fan of korine’s stuff.

[NATHAN SPRINGER VIDEO RESPONSE INTERVIEW]
*
Nathan Springer has become one of my Bay Area homies
he joined me the night I was featured on SPACEDADS last wk
he joins me for Janey Smith’s 851 events
Nathan & I both enjoy the micro music communities & alternative lit communities on the inner-nets
he makes killer music, & @ the end of his vid response he plays us a song (I’ve already listened / watched it several times - it’s beautiful)
Nathan has a project called LIT ON LIT, for which he puts together cassette tapes // puts on bandcamp a collection of audio tracks of writers reading their work, & he often makes music to accompany these readings - ppl such as Steve Roggenbuck, Gabby Gabby, Jamess Ganas, Ashley Obscura, Austin Islam, Crispin Best, Jackson Nieuwland.
here are my favorite moments from the interview:
‘I like the idea of using things that seem to be random to form something cohesive’
‘I would get up about 6 hours into my sleep cycle & try to interrupt my REM cycle, so I’d wake up from these dreams ususally directly & suddenly & still be half in the dreamstate & halfawake […] & a lot of times I’d just be writing the first things that come into my head’
‘the reactions I have to everyday things & the reactions that other people that they express to me make me want to write’
‘right now we live in an absurd world’
‘first album I ever bought: Nellyville. after that I remember getting Lynyrd Skynyrd 20th Century Millenium Edition. Jurassic Park 3 Soundtrack, Slayer. the first record I bought was Explosions in the Sky’
i answered some questions and played some songs for matthew sherling’s blog :]
